NA men in detention for thrashing locals

KATHMANDU, Jan 30: Tension ran high at Sundarijal of Kathmandu on Wednesday after locals took to the streets demanding action against Nepal Army personnel, who thrashed eight people in a restaurant in Sundarijal on Tuesday evening.



In a drunken brawl, the NA men, including soldiers Shyam Tamang and Ramesh Kunwar of Singhanath Battalion, had refused to pay the restaurant bill and thrashed eight people, said SP Lila Raj Shrestha of Sundarijal Police. [break]



Locals obstructed transport movement and burnt tires in the area on Wednesday demanding that the Singhanath Battalion be moved from the Sundarijal area. SP Shrestha said the locals that the situation brought under control after local leaders and NA officers assured locals that the two would be punished.



According to NA Spokesperson Suresh Sharma, the accused are in military detention for further investigation. He said, "We are investigating into the case and if found guilty the accused will face punishment as per the Army Act."



The police said the eight injured are undergoing treatment at Nepal Medical College, Jorpati. SP Shrestha said some policemen were also injured when they tried to intervene in the protest staged by locals on Wednesday.



According to the police, restaurant owner- Anil Shrestha, his mother Tulsimaya Shrestha, Kanchha Tamang and Antare Lama, among others, were injured in the brawl with the two NA men.
