BIRATNAGAR, Oct 6: Musahars, one of the indigenous tribes of Nepal, are generally known to toil for their landlords throughout their lives. They hardly own any piece of land.

However, Musahars of Baijantapur VDC of Morang district have defied tradition by taking up vegetable farming. The Musahars have planted vegetables in 1 bigha of leased land inspiring others from the community to take up vegetable farming. [break]

“Vegetable farming has relived us of the compulsion of working for landlords. We have able to earn good money through sale of vegetables. This has also enabled us to send our children to school,” said Harijan Rishidev.

“Life is good now. We make around Rs 60,000 every month,” said Harijan.

“Had we not taken up vegetable farming, we would not have been living miserably,” said another local Wajit Rishidev.
