TANAHU, March 16: The 125m long Mugling Bridge along the Prithvi Highway that links Mugling of Chitwan with Ambukhaireni VDC of Tanahu is in a bad shape making transportation perilous along the route. The metal planks on the bridge have started to come off creating gaping holes along the bridge.

“We carry more than 40 passengers and every time we cross the bridge a fear that we might meet an accident grips us,” said a bus driver Surya Bahadur Thapa. [break]

Police Inspector Durga Bahadur Madheshi at Mugling Area Police Station said that if the bridge is not repaired on time it could lead to fatal accidents. “The metal planks laid on the bridge have come off as the summer heat loosens the nuts and bolts that grip them,” said Madheshi.

The bridge had wooden planks when it was constructed but the Department of Roads replaced them with gusset plates in 2011.

However, a senior divisional engineer at the department Naresh Shakya said that the contractors have been repairing the bridge every 15 days.

“As per the agreement, the contractors have been tightening the nuts and bolts every 15 days,” Shakya, adding that the damaged nuts and bolts were being replaced with new ones.
