KATHMANDU, March 8: A report released by the Informal Sector Service Center (INSEC) on the occasion of the 113th International Women's Day, has shown that a total of 5,743 woman and girl victims of violence were reported in 2022 - with 4,339 women and 1,444 girls. INSEC provided this data in their report.
According to the report, women and girls were victimized in 24 cases of women’s trafficking and transportation, 24 cases of attempted trafficking and transportation, 3,031 cases of domestic violence, 23 cases of witcraft, 605 cases of rape, 145 cases of attempted rape, and 42 cases of sexual abuse in 2022..
The greatest human right is the right to life. However, women are killed under various pretexts. This year, 111 women were killed as a result of domestic violence. Last year, this number was 112. It is mentioned in the report that one woman was killed for not bringing dowry, while 25 women were subjected to violence for the same reason. INSEC also stated that 15 women were victims of marital rape.
Although there has been significant improvement in the legal provisions related to women and political participation, women in Nepal have been suffering from various forms of structural and gender-based violence. As long as there is weak enforcement, there will be no reduction in these types of crimes, according to the INSEC report.
