Mixed response to Govt’s decision to form Biratnagar metropolis

BIRATNAGAR, May 23: Locals have been divided over the government’s decision to designate Biratnagar as a metropolitan city.


Those who are elated over being a denizen of a metropolitan city have been celebrating the government’s decision whereas those who are opposed to the idea of forming a metropolitan city by incorporating some local units into its orbit have been protesting since Tuesday morning.

Denizens of Tanki Sinwari in Budhiganga Rural Municipality covering Wards 1, 2 and 3 have been disrupting vehicular movement along Koshi highway in protest of the government’s decision to make their area part of Biratnagar Metropolitan City.


Likewise, Ward 3 of Jahada Rural Municipality has also been made part of the newly declared metropolitan city.


Security has been beefed up along Koshi highway to prevent disgruntled locals from obstructing vehicular movement.


 Those who are overjoyed at the government’s decision to form Biratnagar Metropolitan City by putting together the areas covered by the previously declared Biratnagar sub-Metropolitan City and few areas included in Jahada and Budhiganga Rural Municipalities.


After locals of Tankisinwari refused to be separated from Budhiganga Rural Municipality during local level restructuring, the dream of those who wanted to form Biratnagar Metropolitan City had not been realized.
