KATHMANDU, March 27: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Gyanendra Bahadur Karki has reiterated that the MCC grant assistance provided by the US government is purely development assistance.

Addressing an election campaign of the Nepali Congress (NC) in Koshi Rural Municipality of Sunsari on Saturday, Minister Karki asked the party's entire leaders and cadres not to be swayed by the rumors spread against the MCC project. The MCC is only the development project and the grant amount would be spent for infrastructure development including road construction and power grid expansion in Nepal.

Minister Karki said that 77 kilometers of international-standard road would be constructed under the MCC and the grant would be instrumental to drive the country towards prosperity through poverty alleviation. He said that there is no truth in the speculations made by a section of people that the ratification of the MCC grant agreement would pave the way for the arrival of the US military personnel in Nepal.

Minister Karki argued that the agreement would instead open up the door to nation's prosperity as this is in the best interest of people and the country as a whole. Federal lawmaker Sitaram Mehata, Nepali Congress leader Kedar Bhandari and other leaders of the party also addressed the rally.
