KATHMANDU, April 12: Minister for Urban Development, Ram Kumari Jhakri has said that migration and urbanization has taken a dangerous form.

Speaking at a consultative seminar on the Formulation of National Urban Policy, the Urban Development Act and the Utility Corridor Act organized by the Ministry of Urban Development at Kathmandu on Tuesday, she said, “Although immigration is an opportunity, it has not been managed in a proper way.”

Stating that public spaces in Kathmandu are being encroached upon and exploited, she called for an in-depth discussion to stop such activities.

“Migration and Urbanization is one of the major concerns at the moment. However this is also an opportunity and how we use it is the important thing at the moment,” Minister Jhakri said.

“How does the current federal government work in the municipalities? Is it a grant or an investment? Urban development is a very serious  issue. We have built such small streets, there is no empty space except Tudikhel. We have also barred it with nine feet tall railings, the general public is not allowed at all. There is so much encroachment and exploitation of public land in small parks. How to stop the encroachment of the public sector is a big challenge for us.”

The program was inaugurated by Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.
