CHITWAN, Mar 8: Minister for Industry Mahendra Raya Yadav has landed heavily against the major political parties, blaming them for the strikes and gloom running deep in the industrial sector.

He admitted that the government has failed to provide security to industries and investors, but he also attributed the political parties and frequent banda and strikes in the industry for primarily deteriorating investment and production climate in the country. [break]

“It is very unfortunate. Because of frequent strikes and irresponsible politics, industries are presently suffering as much as Rs 250 million a month,” he said. Ministry Yadav said this while inaugurating the first annual convention of Nepal Distributors´ Federation in Sauraha on Monday.

Minister Yadav also expressed his concern over entrepreneurs pulling down shutters of their industries and investors folding their projects. “Industrial closure has already caused lay off of some 200,000 workers,” he added. Yadav also stressed on the need to reverse the gloom running deep in the sector by improving security situation in the country.

“However, the government has failed to impart convincing sense of security among entrepreneurs. And all these problems have risen because the political parties have not translated commitments they made to the entrepreneurs into action,” he said.

He also viewed that the government should take moral responsibility of the attacks on the industries and entrepreneurs, and failure in improving security situation in the industrial sector.

While attributing the current gloom to irresponsible behavior of political parties, Minister Yadav also noted that the security and investment climate will not improve unless the stalemate seen in the political arena is resolved.

He also said the government has already finalized the Industrial Policy in order to boost investors´ confidence and inject life in the industrial sector.

“We are also in the process of tabling new Industrial Bill in the parliament, which will address problems seen in the sector,” he said. He, however, noted that slow proceedings of parliament and lack of certainty over when the next parliamentary meeting will be held has badly impacted overall operation of the government.
