KATHMANDU, March 18: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Gokul Prasad Baskota, has said the role of Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) is highly significant in building of ‘digital Nepal’.

Speaking at a programme organised by the NTA marking its 21st anniversary, the minister said the role of NTA was of high significance in terms of taking a leading role in infrastructure development and policy formulation in the context of the ‘digital Nepal’ concept announced by the government.

The government was planning to open a separate infrastructure development company for the telecom sector and no telecom-related companies owned by the government should be weak under any circumstance. He urged such entities to have a feeling of equality towards private companies.

“The government has been preparing to launch its own satellite and the NTA will be given the responsibility of its operation until another law is formulated”, the Minister who is also the Spokesperson for the government said.

The NTA is accosted by many opportunities, but it should not remain silent on taking action against those failing to complete NTA's assigned task and found engaged in defrauding the people, government and institution.

Briefing about the NTA's progress, its acting chairperson Purushottam Khanal said NTA was always effortful in making its service reliable and accessible to rural and town areas while sticking to the open market policy.

On the occasion, Rajendra Thapa was awarded 'the NTA Service Award' for this year. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 15,000. RSS
