KATHMANDU, Feb 1: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has shut operations at Mid-Marshyangdi Hydropower Project from January 29 for repair work.

The chief of NEA´s Load Dispatch Center Chiranjibi Sharma said the 70-MW project has been shut down for repair of civil and electromechanical infrastructure. Both the turbines of the project were in poor condition with the one at Unit I requiring a replacement and the other at Unit II needing repairs. [break]

A joint team of German and NEA technicians are busy in the repair work that is expected to take a maximum of 20 days. “Service gates are also being repaired and the team will conduct detailed investigation of the project including problems under the water level,” Sharma said.

The run of the river project in Lamjung district was producing around 30 MW of electricity when it was shut down for repair and Sharma said there would not be immediate increase in load-shedding hours because of the repair works.

“We are making optimal use of other resources to limit power cuts to 88 hours a week for now,” he added. He, however, said load shedding may still have to be increased if the water level continued to recede at the current pace.
