Member of Citizenship-less Struggle Committee attempts self-immolation in Maitighar

KATHMANDU, June 14: A young man made a self-immolation attempt in Maitighar Mandala, Kathmandu. Eyewitnesses said the youth set himself on fire in a desperate plea for a citizenship certificate.


The Citizenship-less Struggle Committee, a group that has been actively protesting since the Supreme Court (SC) halted the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Bill approved by President Ram Chandra Poudel on May 17, has been holding demonstrations in Maitighar.

During the demonstration on Tuesday, Niraj Kumar Kamat from Morang Kathari, a member of the Citizenship-less Struggle Committee, poured petrol on himself and attempted self-immolation.


The decision of the apex court to halt the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Bill led to a surge of protests against both the Supreme Court and the government in Maitighar Mandala. The demonstrators have vowed to continue their protests in Kathmandu until the apex court addresses their demands for justice.


Prompt action by the police prevented a tragic outcome, as they swiftly rescued Kamat and rushed him to the trauma center for treatment.
