The council said the candidate has earned his MBBS degree from a Russian university but preferred not to disclose his name. [break]An MBBS graduate has to pass the test conducted by NMC to acquire the license to practice medicine in the country.
NMC also said that there are many such candidates who have earned their MBBS degrees from foreign universities but have failed to pass the NMC test.
In the test conducted by NMC in August this year, 156 students failed to get through. Of them, it was the 17th attempt for two other candidates. They had earned their MBBS degree from Pakistan and Moldova. Another candidate, who had earned his degree from a Chinese university, failed to pass the NMC test even in his 16th attempt.
Similarly, there is a long list of candidates who have attempted the NMC tests for more than the 10th time. The council said that the tests are not so tough and it is the candidates themselves are to blame for failing to get through.
The NMC awards license to practice medicine to candidates who answer at least 50 percent of the objective questions. No MMBS graduates from Nepali universities have failed the NMC tests so far.
NMC registrar Dr Nilmani Upadhaya said it would be risky to award license to MBBS graduate who has failed the NMC test for 26th time. He said students are required to sit for entrance exams before getting enrolled in Nepali universities and those who fail often opt for studies in foreign universities.
Dr Upadhya said council is the body authorized to maintain the quality of doctors. "We should know the quality of the doctors we are producing. So it should be made mandatory for students going for studies abroad to sit for the entrance examinations conducted by Nepali universities."
