KATHMANDU, Jan 15: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Mayor Balendra Shah has commented on the redistribution of Melamchi water in Kathmandu.

Posting a Facebook status on Monday, Mayor Shah satirized the Prime Minister stating how many times he wins the same heart by inaugurating the same project over and over again.

He also reminded that earlier this project had been inaugurated five times. He also said that the technical risks of the Melamchi water distribution project have been ignored.

He wrote, “Technical risks have been ignored. The hill to the east of the estuary is prone to landslides. The spring can be blocked at any time by that fall. Water is being brought from the sand tunnel without removing the sand, retaining the risk. Due to the absence of sand-grabbing structures, sediment can directly enter the tunnel and fill it, potentially taking years and costing billions to extract.”

He stated that bringing water without a thorough technical study and without assessing and addressing the associated technical risks is a political stunt.
