“On the ambassador´s query on formation of a national government, former prime minister told her that he is confident on Maoists´ joining the coalition government,” Suresh Chalise, Koirala´s foreign affairs advisor told myrepublica.
Chalise also informed that the ambassador was concerned about the peace process which in her view is currently in doldrums. In his response, Koirala said that the confidence-building measures and differences among the political parties will be sorted out through a high-level mechanism. "Such a mechanism would assist and advise the government from outside, he told her," Chalise added.
Moreover, Koirala has proposed such a model at the grassroots level too to increase interaction and dialogue between the political parties and the village development committees (VDCs).
Chalise added that Koirala has assured the ambassador that the peace process would be taken to a logical conclusion through cooperation and consensus. In return, Powell assured continuation of US help and support in Nepal´s peace process and democratic polity.
The meeting between the two was a farewell meet as Powell is set to leave Nepal next week. Powell has been named the director general of the US Foreign Service in the State Department by US President Barack Obama. She has served for over 30 years in the US diplomatic service.
