KATHMANDU, Dec 24: The UCPN (Maoist) has decided to send a unilateral request to the Security Council for UNMIN term extension for six more months if other parties do not agree on sending a consensual request.

A meeting of the party´s office bearers on Thursday morning took a decision to this effect, said Maoist Vice-chairman Narayankaji Shrestha. [break]

According to Shrestha, his party held a discussion with other parties in this regard and would further discuss the matter in the days to come. “If other parties do not agree to extend UNMIN term, we will send our unilateral request to the UN Security Council,” Shrestha said.

Though the Security Council decided that the current mandate of the UNMIN would be the last one, the Maoists have argued for continuation of its mandate till May 2011.

In its bid to retain UNMIN, Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal met the ambassadors of five permanent members to the Security Council on Wednesday. But the envoys clearly told him that UNMIN would leave Nepal after January 15.
