A meeting of the Maoist leadership and chiefs of state committees and ethnic fronts on Monday decided to go for 14 provinces even as there are intra-party differences on the delineation of federal provinces. The decision, however, remains to be endorsed by the party´s Standing Committee.
As part of the party´s agitation for "civilian supremacy", the Maoists are scheduled to declare autonomous provinces from December 11.
On Wednesday, the Maoists decided to separate Karnali from Tamsaling province and announce 14 provinces. With this, the Maoists´ proposal on federalism will have 11 ethnicity and two region-based provinces.
“Karnali will be a separate province as the region has a mixed population distribution,” said a leader, requesting anonymity.
