Maoists take up union issue Tuesday

KATHMANDU, April 5: Maoist trade union factions close to Senior Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya and Vice-chairman Dr Baburam Bhattarai have demanded that the party appoint a leader from the Standing Committee to head the committee that will hold the union´s national convention.



"The party should pick a leader form the Standing Committee acceptable to all the factions," said union leader Badri Bajgain from the Baidya faction. [break]



He said his faction would accept party secretary Posta Bahadur Bogati as the head of such a committee. "If not, we will also accept another party secretary, CP Gajurel, to lead the committee," Bajgain said.



The party establishment is in favor of giving the responsibility to either incumbent chief Saligram Jammakattel or union in-charge Shakti Basnet.



Lal Dhwoj Nembang, who leads the Bhattarai faction of the union, also stated that the party should pick a Standing Committee member to head such a committee.



The Maoists are holding a meeting of party top office-bearers on Tuesday to settle factional disputes in its trade union. The three union leaders representing the three different party factions will be invited to the meeting.
