BANEPA, May 15: The UCPN (Maoist) have started collecting donations from remote VDCs of Kavre district yet again. Of late the UML leaders and its cadres have also been targeted.

The Maoists have demanded Rs 100,000 from Ishwar Poudel, UML´s council member.

“The Maoists have sent me a letter through students on Tuesday. The letter is signed by Maoist regional committee secretary,” Poudel said. [break]

Along with Poudel, the Maoists have demanded donations ranging from 50,000 to 100,000 from 14 other UML cadres.

The Maoists have also asked for donations from UML cadres in Kanpur, Mechhe, Boldefediche, Sasyukharka, Methinkot and dozens of other VDCs.

The UML has criticized the Maoist move. The party has warned that it would chase the Maoists from Kavre if they do not put an end to donation drive.

At a press meet, Gokul Baskota, the president of the UML district committee, said, “It is illegal to collect money to pay back loan incurred during Maoist-led protest. The Maoists cannot do whatever they like. Just as they have hurt our cadres, we will also go to their houses and chase them away.”

Baskota said that no UML cadre will give donation. He also requested the industrialists and businessmen to abstain from giving donation to the Maoists.
