Officials and administrators have been forced to stay out of the offices after the Maoist student wing, All Nepal Independent Students Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R), padlocked the offices protesting the appointment the examination controller. [break]
The only Sanskrit university in the country has recently appointed Prem Kumar Achayra as controller according to the recommendation made by a committee. Acharya, known as a right leaning had replaced a Maoist-supported official.
The university formed a talks committee headed by Rector Dr Bhagwat Prasad Sharma but ANNISU-R has insisted on talks with Vice-chancellor Bidur Paudel. Paudel is in Kathmandu and the union has warned of more protests if Poudel fails to talk to them by Sunday.
“We will only talk with the vice-chancellor,” ANNISU-R district chairman Basant Chaudhary said. He added that their protest is against the process, not the appointment itself. “The decision was taken without consulting us,” he added.
“No one can go against the university rules, neither vice-chancellor nor me,” Dr Sharma said. “The appointment was done in accordance with the committee recommendation and cannot be changed.”
