CHANDRANIGAHAPUR, May 31: Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal said on Sunday that he was ready to tolerate any criticism from the opposition parties for the sake of political consensus and cooperation as the country is at a very critical juncture of political history. [break]

The newly elected Prime Minister said the opposition parties, mainly the UCPN (Maoist), were "spitting venom" against him, but that he would put up with it as he is at the helm of government at a very critical time.

"I am ready to tolerate it for the task of nation building. I will not let the political situation deteriorate," Nepal said referring to Hindu Lord Shiva who is said to have drunk venom to save the world. He said he wants to become a cultured, civilian Prime Minister.

Nepal was speaking at a function organized in his home district Rautahat to felicitate him after his election to Prime Minister last week.

While arguing that the significance of the 12-point agreement reached between then Seven Party Alliance and Maoists in June, 2006, had not outdated, Nepal stressed the need of consensus and cooperation among the political parties to take the peace process to its logical end.

"The unfinished task of the peace process should be completed through consensus," he said.

It may be recalled that both Nepali Congress president Girija Prasad Koirala and UCPN (Maoist) chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal have argued that the historic agreement between the government and the Maoists had outdated and pointed out the need for a new agreement among the political actors.

Nepal said he was well-aware of the fact that full cooperation of the UCPN (Maoist) was needed for the drafting of a new constitution, and called on the largest political party in the Constituent Assembly to join the government. "We can complete our mission only through cooperation," he said.

According to Nepal, the new government will get a full shape in a couple of days.

Nepal also refuted the charge that his party and the Nepali Congress (NC) were trying to split the Madhesi People´s Rights Forum (MPRF).

MPRF chairman Upendra Yadav has held the NC and the UML responsible behind the heightening tension in his party.

Nepal, who is accompanied by his wife, also visited district headquarters Gaur. He was also scheduled to visit the Koshi River on Sunday.

Black flag greets PM

A UCPN (Maoist) activist threw a black flag at Nepal while the latter was speaking from the dais. Security personnel immediately took him under control.
