Maoist leaders critical of malpractices in the party

KATHMANDU, April 27: They dismiss it when I suggest it, but everyone hails the same thing when the chief repeats it. And this is the same story that happens over and over again.

This was the grievance of a wise tailor in a story quoted by Maoist leader Lekh Raj Bhatta at the party central committee (CC) meeting on Thursday. The villagers dismissed whatever the poor and low caste tailor said, but people hailed it as great wisdom when the powerful village chief stated the same.[break]

Bhatta was critical of the party leaders who termed the line of peace and constitution, floated by Vice-chairman Dr Baburam Bhattarai, “rightist and revisionist”, and Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has floated the same idea now, but he is still a “revolutionary and great strategist” in the party.

The party CC meeting has been debating the new political document presented by Dahal who has proposed changing the earlier official line of "revolt and state capture" and focusing on the line of peace and constitution.

Bhatta, who is close to Bhattari, made fun of the party leaders who have termed the ongoing CC meeting ´historic´, and argued that the meeting was no different from the previous ones.

“We have the same ideas, same character, same behavior, same fighters and same fence-sitters; it is in fact Palungtar part-2,”a CC member quoted Bhatta as saying.

Bhatta, who is close to Bhattarai, also came down heavily on the growing trend of “dishonesty and malpractices” in the party. “Ninety nine percent of the people are dishonest, but still my country is great,” said a leader quoting Bhatta.

Bhatta criticized the ideological deviation and financial irregularities in the party and illegal practices of Maoist leaders.

Most of the leaders who spoke on Tuesday also bashed the party leadership for ´double standards´.

“The party leadership has in fact transformed the dreams of the martyrs into personal aggrandizement,” a source quoted leader Jayapuri Ghartimagar as saying. Ghartimagar, who is close to Senior Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya, launched a lacerating criticism against the chairman for his U-turn of the party policy.

Similarly, Santosh Budhamagar stated that Dahal is responsible for everything undesirable in the party.

“He has consistently been telling lies since the Kharipati meeting. He is reluctant to bring out the program of revolt,” a leader quoted Budhamagar as saying.

Similarly, Krishna KC said he is ready to quit the party, instead of following a leader blindly. KC, who is close to Dahal, stated that the trend of sycophancy and palm-greasing has gone up recently. He also stated that he cannot subscribe to everything Dahal says.

Om Prakash Pun, who is the only one of the eight CC members to join the party from CPN (United) led by Nawaraj Subedi, was also critical of Dahal. The remaining seven members from that party have joined Bhattarai faction.

On Tuesday, 43 CC members put forward their views. Of the 148 CC members, 133 leaders registered their names to speak at the CC. Nine leaders are scheduled to speak on Wednesday. Then the party is expected to endorse Dahal´s document by a majority vote.
