KATHMANDU, Dec 4: At a time when both the Nepali Congress (NC) and the CPN-UML have intensified negotiations with other parties to form a new government, the CPN (Maoist Center)—a key ally in any future alliance-- has said that it is open to all options for the formation of the new government.

The decision of Maoist Center comes at a time when the UML is offering the Maoist Center the prime ministerial berth even as the party contested election forging electoral alliance with the ruling NC.

Sources said NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba has asked Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal to support him as the new prime minister. But Maoist Center Chairman Dahal has been saying in public that he will be the first prime minister in the new parliament, hinting at possible arrangements to share the post of prime minister after some time.

A meeting of the Maoist Center’s office bearers held on Saturday to review the election results made a decision to keep all alternatives open to form a new government. Talking to media persons after the meeting, Maoist Center Vice Chairman Krishna Bahadur Mahara said the meeting will continue on Sunday as well.

“We made a preliminary review of the election results. We concluded that we could not get victory as expected. However, the overall results are satisfactory. We have decided to make the review once the final results of all constituencies are out,” he said.

Asked if the Maoist Center had decided to quit the current alliance with the NC, Mahara said, “No decision has been made yet to quit the alliance. But we have decided to keep other options open as well. We can opt for various alternatives. But no decision has been made yet to quit the ruling alliance.”

Maoist Center General Secretary Dev Gurung said the office bearers’ meeting will continue on Sunday.
