Maoist acts 'undemocratic'

LAHAN, Dec 26: CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal on Saturday said the Maoist announcement of autonomous states was ´undemocratic´ and ´unconstitutional´.



Inaugurating the seventh national convention of the party´s youth wing, Democratic National Youth Federation (DNYF), in Lahan, Khanal urged the Maoists to leave the streets and adopt the path of negotiation.


Khanal said it is difficult to draft a new constitution without consensus among thee major parties -- UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and the UML. He said the Maoists had started attacking UML cadres and disrupted UML rallies in different parts of the country, fearing from a growing tendency of Maoist cadres joining the UML.







Addressing the function, senior UML leader K P Sharma Oli alleged that big media were trying to split the UML. He also criticized the Maoists for attacking journalists and disrupting UML rallies.



The three-day national convention will elect new leadership of the DNYF.



Local administration had mobilized over 600 police personnel for the security of the convention, fearing possible attack from Maoists.
