Manarup Shahi unqualified: Writ petition

KATHMANDU, July 8: A writ petition has been filed at the Supreme Court (SC) seeking nullification of appointment of Manarup Shahi as the executive chairman of Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC).



Writ petitioner Chhatra Prasad Rai claimed that the government flouted existing laws while appointing Shahi to the post. "Shahi is ineligible for the post," reads the petition, adding, "The government flouted provisions of Clause 4 of NAC Act 2019 BS and NAC Regulations." The petitioner has demanded an order from the court to bar Shahi from working in capacity of NAC executive chairman."[break]



As per NAC Act and Regulations, one requires expertise in the field of aviation, management or accounting to be eligible for the post of NAC chairman. The NAC Act and Regulations also stipulate that the candidate should have a bachleor´s degree.



"Shahi is ineligible for appointment as NAC executive chairman as he has neither expertise in required fields nor a bachelor´s degree. Hence, the SC should issue stay order to block him to work in capacity of NAC executive chairman."



The cabinet meeting held last week had appointed Shahi to the post.
