UDAYAPUR, May 1: A young man committed suicide at a quarantine facility in Udayapur on Thursday midnight, police said.

Suman Biswakarma, 18, was found hanging by a rope at the quarantine facility set up inside the local Rauta Janata Campus in Rajabas, Rautamai Rural Municipality-7, on Friday morning.

It is learnt that the man committed suicide because he could not cope up with the isolation at the quarantine facility amid COVID-19 fears. Officials at the District Police Office, Udayapur, said that the wife of the man first saw her husband hanging from the ceiling of the quarantine room at 3 AM and immediately reported to the local administration.

The young man went to bed at around 8 PM on Thursday,  after the evening meal.

Superintendent of Police, Bir Bahadur Magar, said that they are investigating the incident.

"We have reached the incident site. The body is currently being brought to the District Hospital for a post-mortem," he said.

According to the chief executive officer of the rural municipality, Khamba Raj Rai, the man, and his wife were rescued from Kathmandu and taken to the quarantine facility only last week amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The newly-wed couple had reached Kathmandu a couple of months ago in search of jobs but it had to be rescued and brought to Udayapur.
