Dr Sushil Khaniya at the Lamjung District Community Hospital informed that most of the prisoners are having mental problems as they are living far away from their families. They show signs of panicking and continuous gazing.
Dr Khaniya added that the prisoners are developing mental problems due to lack of engagement in any creative activities and their compulsion to live in small, congested space inside the cells.
The doctors involved in the medical test even said that the prisoners are having skin problems. General Surgeon Dr Prakash Shah informed that they are even undergoing problems like chest pain, headache, flu, gastritis and joint pain.
“Besides the mental illness, most of them have problems of high blood pressure, breathing problem, diabetes and flu,” said Shah. He is of the view that many are contracting tuberculosis from other fellow prisoners who are patients of the deadly disease.
The concerned doctors have informed that the prisoners were administered with the required medications after the check-up.
There are 72 prisoners kept at the 'Gha Class' Lamjung Prison having capacity to accommodate only 24 prisoners. Out of them, 66 prisoners are male and six are female while two children are also living with them. The prison administration has informed that the compulsion to keep as many prisoners as possible in a compact room is posing a big challenge to them. The inmates are being infected by flu and other communicable diseases as many of them are kept in a single room.
As the prisoners were suffering from various diseases due to cold, the Rotaract Club of Lamjung initiated the health check-up in coordination with the District Community Hospital.
