Chasing a tough target of 169 runs, Punjab lost their both openers Sunny Sohal (30) and Simon Katich (9) for 42 runs and later lost captain Yuvraj Singh (25) and Kumar Sangakkara (18) at 86 runs on the board.
However, Mahela Jayawardene took charge and steered his team close to victory before being declared run out. He top-scored with 43 from 28 balls and hit three sixes.
Then, tail-enders Brett Lee and Piyush Chawla got victory for their team with one ball left.
For Deccan, Shoaib Ahmed and Rohit Sharma took two wickets each while Suman claimed one wicket.
Earlier, Deccan Chargers scored 168 runs for five wickets with the help of Andrew Symonds’ hurricane innings after Punjab captain Yuvraj won the toss and elected to field.
Deccan Chargers lost four wickets for only 73 runs but then Symonds and Venugopal Rao came together to add 95 runs from 56 balls.
Symonds smashed an unbeaten 60 from just 36 balls with four sixes and two fours while Rao supported him with an enterprising 32 off 25 balls.
Other significant scorers were Suman (27) and captain Adam Gilchrist (20).
For Kings XI Punjab, Brett Lee, Sreesanth, Piyush Chawla and Wilkin Mota claimed one wicket each.
