Maharjan receives cash prize

KATHMANDU, Dec 15: Boxer Deepak Maharjan was awarded cash prize by a local club of his village for his victory in the 16th Asian Games held recently in Guangzhou, China.



Bosigaun Sports Club felicitated Maharjan and handed him Rs 250,000 amidst a function. [break]



Maharjan, who bagged a bronze medal in the 81 kg category of boxing, was Nepal´s only athlete to win a medal. He had defeated Thai boxer Sukkham Kraingkai in the quarterfinal bout to secure the medal. Altogether 129 Nepali athletes had participated in 19 different events in the Asiad.



Maharjan said that the love and respect that he received after winning medal in the Asiad has motivated him to keep up his pace as he gears for the London Olympics.



“I will perform to the best of my abilities to get qualified for the Olympics. The felicitation that I am receiving right now motivates and compels me to give my best for the Olympics,” he said.



“I feel really glad to have won a medal for my country. The medal was the fruit of my relentless efforts. I didn´t fight for any group or political party. It was for my country that I fought,” he added.



Maharjan said that the felicitation has made him feel that he has contributed something to the nation. He also thanked all those who felicitated him.



“I would like to thank the locals of my birthplace, Bosigaun Sports Club and all those who contributed for this honor,” he said.



The Bosigaun Sports Club had collected Rs 103,000 from Machhindranath Brick Industry. Likewise, Asahi Homes provided Rs 50,000 and Mountain Housing contributed Rs 30,000 for Maharjan´s felicitation.



Maharjan´s coach Prachanda Sharma and team manager Rajiv Shrestha were also felicitated during the function.
