Paija is just one among 31 locals in the village who have left for London after the UK government decided to provide residential permits to ex-Gurkhas. Others moved to Kathmandu and Pokhara. [break]
“Once they left, they have never returned,” said a local Jash Bahadur Tilija.
Of the 120 houses in the village, four dozen have already been abandoned. Worse still, there are hardly any youths left in the village. “Most of the youths are working abroad. There are hardly any youths left to work in the fields,” Tilija said.
Another local Manbir Garbuja stated that the village would soon be completely deserted as the populace dominated by Magar community is leaving the village in search of greener pastures.
“In fact, most locals who worked in the UK and the Indian army have now retired and are eager to settle down in UK,” Garbuja said.
