Magar community observes Bhume Parba

KATHMANDU, June 15 : Magar community residing in the capital observed ´Bhume Parba´ at Khulla Manch on Saturday. They sacrificed a sheep and performed Nokobange dance, which is also called Baishtal dance to make the ´Bhume´, or earth, happy.



Magar community is known to worship nature and the festival is observed on the eve of monsoon, performing different rituals aimed at making the earth happy. "To keep our tradition and culture alive, we celebrated the festival in the capital on Saturday," said Durlav Pun, a member of the organizing committee. He said that before cultivating crops, the community worships the nature. [break]



According to Pun, Magar community treats nature as god and during the rituals requests the earth not to give troubles during monsoon. They also pray for good harvest. The community performs the dance for five days but Pun said they will perform for three days.



Pun said that the festival is also being observed in Thawang of Rolpa. Rolpa is the main hub of Magar community.



He said that the festival is celebrated across the western region which is also called 18 Magarant area.



In the past, the community began preparations for the festival a month in advance. "People went to high land to get buki (Flower) to offer to the Bhume god," he added.

He said that some people also sacrifice pig to make the god happy. Demanding national holiday on first of Ashar, the community on Monday submitted a memorandum to the minister for culture, who attended the festival as chief guest.
