KATHMANDU, Jan 5: While the Melamchi water supply project gears up to deliver water to Kathmandu in the coming days, the local residents have issued a warning that the water supply will be halted. The Melamchi Water Supply Flood Victims Struggle Committee has summoned a meeting at Ganeshe Bagar in Helambu Rural Municipality Ward No. 2 on Saturday to plan a protest program.

The locals, led by former Ward Chairman of Helambu-2, Chiring Galbo Lama, stated that the Bhremathang landslide was a result of the Melamchi project, causing losses to residents on the banks of the river. Lama emphasized that despite the damages, no compensation has been received, outlining 12 points of concern related to the project. He warned, "If these concerns are not addressed, we will halt the water supply."

Lama alleged that the water supply project's vulnerabilities led to floods in the Melamchi River, causing damage to cultivated land. However, he claimed that no attention has been paid to this issue. On June 15, 2021, the project's headworks suffered damage due to a flood from Bhremathang.

With Suresh Acharya appointed as the Secretary of the Ministry of Water Supply, an agreement was reached with SinoHydro on December 20 to bring water to Kathmandu within 28 days. The project has been asserting its commitment to supplying water to Kathmandu by January 15.
