KATHMANDU, Oct 25: Local people on Friday staged a sit-in at the municipal office of Chandragiri municipality demanding the immediate removal of all the brick kilns operated in Chandragiri and Kirtipur municipalities.
On the occasion, they handed over the memorandum to Mayor Ghanashyam Giri with a five-day ultimatum to implement the decision of dismantling brick kilns. They also warned of launching stern agitation against the municipality if it failed to meet their demands. The locals have formed a struggle committee to further intensify their protests.
“If municipal office failed to implement its earlier decision of demolishing those factories which emit several gases contributing the spread of various deadly diseases including cancer, we would launch a strong protest,” coordinator of a struggle committee Mukunda Ghimire told Republica Online.
He blamed the municipal office for not taking the necessary steps to make their locality pollution-free.
Responding to the agitators, mayor Giri vowed to make necessary arrangements at the earliest regarding demolishing the kilns after holding discussions with all the wards and stakeholders.
Also speaking on the occasion, ward chairperson of Kirtipur-4 Rajendra Baniya said that they are ready to take immediate action with the view to addressing the demands of the agitating locals. “I support your endeavors of making our municipality a pollution-free zone through this campaign,” he said while addressing the locals at Chandragiri municipality.
