Locals injured fighting bandits

SIRAHA, Dec 3: Five people were injured while trying to retaliate against robbers in the wee hours of Friday at Belha-1 in Siraha at a time when police have initiated a special operation focused on Lahan following a rise in criminal activities in the district.



Inspector at the District Police Office, Narayan Chimoriya, said Binod Sah and Jug Lal Mukhiya were critically injured when a group of 10-12 armed robbers looted houses of Jug Lal, Tatara Mukhiya, Binod and Mukh Lal Mukhiya at one in the morning. [break]



Binod and Jug Lal, whose bodies have been hacked with khukuris, are undergoing treatment at the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan while the rest three are being treated at the district hospital.



The victims said the masked bandits made away with property worth Rs 500,000 while the police put the loss in the robbery at Rs 150,000. Locals claimed that the courage of the unarmed people could not foil the robbery as the security forces could not reach the village just three kilometers away from the district headquarters on time.



Siraha district police said forces were mobilized immediately after receiving the information but the dacoits fled through the Kamala river route. But locals claimed police didn´t arrive even as the robbers took the village under control for hours and even detonated bombs.



Businessman shot at



Businessman Gagan Bhandari has been shot while sleeping at his home in Dhangadi-7, Beli, Friday morning, according to our Dhangadi correspondent Dil Bahadur Chhatyal.



Two youths cloaked with blankets broke through Bhandari´s house and shot Bhandari, 55, in his stomach when he went to the door after hearing noise.



“We (nine family members) were sleeping when suddenly somebody started to bang on the door. Dad got up and went toward the door but the door gave in and they shot at him,” Bhandari´s son Dilu said. “They fled even as dad went down after being shot at the right side of the stomach,” he added.



Bhandari´s the owner of Durga Bhawani Rice Mill, has been taken to Kathmandu for further treatment on referral of the Seti Zonal Hospital.
