SARLAHI, June 16: Locals from Harion, Sarlahi are in dismay after the sewage formed during the manufacture of alcohol at Amarwati Distillery entered their homes.

Locals were affected after the sewage from the distillery that should have been treated properly before being directed to a proper route entered their property. “Due to the foul smell we have not even been able to live in our homes for four days,” a local, Lal Bahadur Waiba complained, “The sewage even entered our homes three days ago. Now it is affecting our maize crop.” He said that the maize plants that should have started to bear grains by now have been affected by the sewage.

“We have not been able to walk freely in our homes,” he said, “We are afraid that we will catch diseases.” Locals are struck by the fear of epidemics that may break out due to this improper management of sewage.

“We have filed a complaint at the municipality office and have even repeatedly complained to the distillery,” he said, “But our pleas have not been addressed.” Workers from the distillery have said that the problem arose after a reserve tank of the distillery burst.

Waiba added that the factory has even brought motors claiming for 3 days that they will suck out all the sewage but they have not done so. He said, “Yet, our fields are full of sewage and it is difficult even to breathe.”

Mayor of Harion Municipality, Ganesh Prasai on the other hand said that talks are underway with the distillery about the management of the sewage. “A team led by the deputy mayor visited the site for inspection yesterday,” he added, “We have hastened the talks with the distillery for an instant solution to the problem.”
