KATHMANDU, May 31: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has decided to bring down power cut schedule to four hours a day with effect from Monday.

The public utility has been imposing eight-hours-a-day power cut since May 20.

But the NEA has been providing uninterrupted power supply for a couple of days as water levels in rivers rose with the start of the monsoon, officials said.

"The power cut length has been reduced to four hours a day," the NEA said in a notice issued on Sunday.

Decreasing demand after the end of winter season also helped NEA to reduce power cut hours. Currently, total demand during peak (evening) hours is about 630 MW. Total electricity generation from all hydro projects in the country is over 500 MW while about 90 MW of electricity is imported from India, he said. Also, power generation from some thermal plants has contributed to the national grid.
