KATHMANDU, April 12: Lalitpur District Education Office has decided to scrap the license of 16 private 'ghost' schools.

According to the DEO officials, the schools were registered with the district education office but they were not in existence. After the implementation of the eighth amendment to the Education Act, which categorized registration of private schools under company and trust, the license holders of schools running under company rule started trying to sell the schools for kickbacks.

The schools that existed only on papers were Jyoti Academy, Sunny Side Academy, Care Top School, Kent Secondary School, Gorkha Memorial English School, World Vision School, Prajwal Pre-Primary School, Purnatara School, Mamata Biddhyasadan School, Crescent Secondary School, Dakshinkali Primary, Bridge Water School, Mt Valley Boarding School, Gyan Avatar Boarding School and Gyanjyoti School. They were running classes ranging from pre-primary level to secondary level.
The DEO found that those schools existed only on papers in course of monitoring.
