BIRATNAGAR, June 26: Lentil prices have been increasing in Biratnagar in the last few weeks after India started controlling its exports. The Indian government has started purchasing lentils directly from the farmers to address huge gap in supply and demand.

Price of Rahar Dal in Biratnagar has increased to Rs 110 per kg from Rs 90 recorded a few weeks ago. It is priced Rs 115 in Jogbani. [break]

“We haven´t been able to import lentils as per the demand due to supply constraints from India. Low supplies from the other side of the border has pushed up the prices,” Roshan Mishra, a local retailer in Jogbani, said.

Mishra said price of lentils have also increased in Indian market has they have not been able to get the supplies as per the demand.

Nepal is largely dependent on international markets for lentils as local production is not sufficient to meet the rising demand.

“Our increasing dependency on India production is the main reason behind price rise,” Ganga Bishanka Rathi, president of Biratnagar-based Rice and Paddy Traders´ Association, said.

As India is paying high price for lentils, Nepali farmers are illegally exporting lentils to India, Rathi said.
