LDCs' concerns raised in Vienna

KATHAMNDU, Nov 25: Minister for Commerce and Supplies Lekh Raj Bhatta said Friday that food, fuel and financial crises have been seriously threatening jobs and livelihoods of millions of people in the least developed countries (LDCs).



Bhatta, who chaired the 4th Ministerial Conference of LDCs in Vienna convened by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), also highlighted the principles and priority areas spelled out in the Istanbul Program of Action for the LDCs. [break]



He also stressed the need to build productive capacity through effective implementation of Aid for Trade (AFT) program and sufficient financing of the Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF).



Minister Bhatta also urged development partners and international organizations to expedite works on AFT by providing adequate funds to implement well-targeted programs, enabling measures, including LDCs´ increased participation in international trade.



He also apprised the delegates of progress in peace process and country´s democratic transition and added that it has opened up huge investment opportunities in sectors like hydropower and tourism.



The two-day LDCs Conference will conclude on Saturday by adopting UNIDO´s Operational Strategy for the LDCs for the period 2011-2020.
