Speaking in parliament Tuesday, lawmakers from various political parties urged the government not to use excessive force against demonstrators and also appealed to the protesters to seek solutions through peaceful demonstrations. Lawmakers have condemned both the administration for the deaths of protesters and the protesters for vandalizing a statue of Girija Prasad Koirala.Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Rajendra Amatya, who represents from Parsa district, expressed sorrow at the demise of protesters in the district and urged both the government and the agitating political parties to exercise restrain. "It is very sad that both the government and the protesters are failing to exercise restraint despite the demise of protesters," he said. "I draw the government's attention to the tension in Parsa and Bara districts and urge that the situation be brought under control at the earliest."
Similarly, CPN-UML lawmaker Keshav Badal also urged the government and the agitating parties to hold talks and bring the protests to a halt. "Let's stop the violent protests as it is Nepali citizens who are losing their lives, whether they are protesters or security personnel. Such protests only help to foil the constitution making process," said Badal. He also condemned the vandalizing of statues of Koirala and Manmohan Adhikari.
UCPN (Maoist) Chief Whip Giriraj Mani Pokhrel stressed the need to settle the disputes through dialogue. He was of the view that neither the army deployment nor violent protests would be a solution. "Neither army deployment nor use of excessive force by the government and killing of security personal by protesters are a solution," Pokharel said. "Solutions can be sought only through dialogue and both sides need to be ready for talks."
Leaders of Madhes-based political parties urged the government and the major political parties to take serious initiatives for tackling the situation without any delay. Janak Raj Chaudhari of Madhesi People's Rights Forum Democratic (MPRF-D), Shivaji Yadav of Federal Socialist Forum Nepal (FSFN), Akwal Ahamad Sah of Tarai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP), Dimple Jha of Nepal Shadbhawana Party and Gopal Dahit of Tharuhat Tarai Party Nepal criticized the government for not showing seriousness about talks.
"While the major political parties claim public support for the draft of the new constitution, their party offices and the statues of their leaders have been attacked in the Tarai," he said. "If they fail to address the situation people's ire may manifest itself within the CA itself." Leaders representing the Tarai also condemned the deployment of the army in the area.
