KATHMANDU, July 2: Taking strong exception to the distribution of sub-standard food to the earthquake victims by the World Food Program (WFP), several lawmakers on Thursday asked the government to inquire about the controversial remarks of senior United Nations (UN) official and his veiled threats to pull out support to Nepal.

Speaking at the parliament meeting on Thursday, UCPN (Maoist) lawmaker Agni Sapkota asked the government to inform the House about its efforts to prevent the wrongdoings of the WFP. He also strongly objected to veiled threats of the UN official.

Director of Coordination and Response Division of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) John Ging had termed the media reports 'nonsense' and issued veiled threats to pull out WFP's support to Nepal on Wednesday. "Why does not our government raise the question against the wrongdoings of the WFP in the UN Headquarters through our permanent representative in New York?" asked Sapkota.Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Ram Hari Khatiwada also objected to remarks by the OCHA official. "The UN body has threatened to withdraw its assistance defending its distribution of rotten rice to the quake victims. This is objectionable," said Khatiwada. He suggested to the government to inspect the food being distributed through WFP's national partners to the earthquake victims.
