KATHMANDU, July 28: Lawmakers from various major political parties have strongly criticized the government for the delay in appointing Chief Executive Officer in the High-Powered Reconstruction Authority.

Lawmakers from Nepali Congress (NC), CPN-UML and UCPN (Maoist), among other parties, while airing their views at a parliament meeting on Tuesday criticized the government for not appointing key officials such as vice-chairperson and CEO in the body. The government in June had issued an ordinance for constituting the body under the leadership of the prime minister to rehabilitate earth quake-affected communities and reconstruct quake-ravaged buildings and other structures.

The ministers had then argued for formation of the body through ordinance, saying it would be impractical to wait until the parliament session began.

But the government has yet to appoint key officials such as CEO, let alone start the work of reconstruction and rehabilitation.

NC lawmaker Ramhari Khatiwada said the government shouldn't further delay key appointments as it may divert the attention of international donors to other countries. "

"If there is further delay, international donors, who have pledged us support, may choose other countries for their suppo"t," said Khatiwada.

UML's Ramhari Subedi sought clarification from the government as to what has been delaying appointment of key officials in the authority."

"The government formed the authority in such haste that it did not even wait for the House session to begin. But there has been no progress at all even after wee"s," said Subed". "The government must answer this parliament as to what has been delaying the appointmen"s."

Likewise, Ram Narayan Bidari of UCPN (Maoist) flayed the government for not giving the authority a full shape and not beginning the task even as thousands of quake-affected people have been living miserably under tents and makeshift huts"

"The government must answer this parliament and the public as we"l," said Bidari.
