KATHMANDU, Sept 6: Nepali Congress lawmaker Achut Pandey was briefly in police custody Monday evening after he was picked up during a raid at a privately run mini-casino in the capital.

“We released him shortly after due to lack of ´sufficient evidence´,” Superintendent of Police (SP) Ramesh Kharel said. “The operation team failed to land at the gambling house at the right time. The gamblers would otherwise have been arrested red-handed.”

A team from Metropolitan Police Range Kathmandu raided the mini-casino run by one Dinesh Sherchan at Bhotebahal when six persons including lawmaker Pandey had just showed up there. “They were spared just because of the circumstances. We had impeccable information that they regularly visited there for gambling."

Speaker Subas Nembang, as head of parliament, was immediately informed about the apprehension of the lawmaker. According to police sources, Pandey insisted that he was at the gambling house for a business deal with a bag manufacturer nearby.

Police released all six arrested but kept mini-casino owner Sherchan in detention.
