KATHMANDU, July 12: The famous climber and the youngest Mt. Everest summiteer Shambhu Tamang was cremated at Swayambhu on Monday with state honors. Tamang was also among the founder member and an advisor at the Nepal mountaineering association (NMA).
Late Tamang, who was diagnosed with cancer and admitted to Nepal Cancer Hospital and Research Center at Harisiddhi Lalitpur, breathed his last breath on Thursday. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
The funeral procession started from his home at Chakrapath. A band of Nepal Police accompanied the procession with mournful music. Monks, nuns, mountaineers, tourism entrepreneurs, relatives and hundreds of people participated in his funeral procession.

Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA) Jeewan Ram Shrestha draped the national flag and the president of Nepal Mountaineering Association (MMA) Mr Nima Nuru Sherpa draped the flag of NMA on Tamang’s body.
Dignitaries that were present at the funeral to pay their last tribute to the late included Former Minister Hishila Yami. Tamang was offered a guard of honor and a gun salute by the band of Nepal Police.
Late Tamang climbed the summit of the world’s highest mountain in 1973 at the age of 17 years, 6 months and 15 days to be the world’s youngest person. His role was significant in the establishment of NMA. He was still contributing as an advisor of NMA.
Recently the council of ministers, at the request of NMA, had decided to provide 1 million and a state honor to Late Tamang as a tribute. NMA extended this gratitude to the government of Nepal for their decision to pay state honors to the late Tamang.
‘‘On behalf of NMA, I would like to thank the government of Nepal for the decision of providing 1 million and a state honor to late Tamang’’, President of NMA Mr Nima Nuru Sherpa said, ‘‘This is what we mountaineers aspire for from the government. I hope, the government will repeat such good decisions in the days to come.’’
