Landslide in newly built quake resistant house, again back to temporary shelter

GORKHA, Aug 14: It’s just been three months Tilak Bahadur Baniya, a local resident of Bhimsen Thapa rural municipality-1 started staying at his new house after spending three long years in a temporary shelter.

GORKHA, Aug 14: It’s just been three months Tilak Bahadur Baniya, a local resident of Bhimsen Thapa rural municipality-1 started staying at his new house after spending three long years in a temporary shelter.


His house was destroyed by the 2015 earthquake.


He built a two roomed house out of bricks and cement with earthquake resistant pillars in between. However, he is unable to continue staying at his newly built house as it is in high risk of landslide. Now he is compelled to stay at a temporary shelter nearby his house. Also he has taken his cattle with himself.

“It is raining continuously so is the landslide occuring continuously.” Tilak said. He is unable to sleep properly thinking that his cattle would be buried by the landslide. Sunita, his wife goes to new house during afternoon when it is sunny however, she does not dare to go when it is raining as there is already a landslide behind the building.

Not only a single house is in risk of the landslide however, remaining all other houses are of the Bhimsen Thapa rural municipality-01 are in risk. Before this year there was nothing such risk for the landslide but now, after the construction of the road section above the village area, the risk for landslide increased. The muddy section has been swept away by the downpour during this monsoon for which the village is facing the problem. Use of big machines for the construction of the road made the land section weak and consequently occurance of the lanslide.


“We are worried whether the lanslide sweeps away the whole village”, said Padam Bahadur Baniya, a local of Nibel, Bhimsen Thapa rural municipality-1.  


Nibel is a well facilitated village which is connected with municipality and also near by the Barpak road section. There is good production of paddy, vegetables including off season vegetables. After the construction of road section above the village, the rainfall is sweeping away all the gravels to the fields. Bhimsen Bhatta, a local, said that the production is being highly affected.


Villagers have already informed about the risk of landslide to the local representatives and the office the rural municipality. Ishwor Pandey, rural municipality chairman said that he is also well informed about it and has already sent the earthmover to clear the debris. Chairman Pandey further added that, “We are well aware and we are working on it to find a good way.”He also said that the protection of productive field is of high importance.
