Lalitpur metropolis to construct state-of-the-art sky bridge to improve accessibility

The metropolis has emphasized that this innovative sky bridge will prioritize accessibility for disabled individual.

KATHMANDU, Sep 3: Lalitpur Metropolitan City (LMC) has announced plans to construct a cutting-edge sky bridge equipped with elevators and accessible toilets on the Ring Road in Kusunti. The metropolis has emphasized that this innovative sky bridge will prioritize accessibility for disabled individual.


Mayor Chiribabu Maharjan of LMC asserted that this sky bridge, a project initiated by the metropolis, will be the first of its kind in the valley. He stated, "While there are several sky bridges in existence, they are not designed with the needs of disabled individuals and senior citizens in mind. This bridge, which will accommodate the sick and disabled, may serve as a national model."

The Department of Road granted approval to Lalitpur metropolis for the pedestrian sky bridge project on the Ring Road last Sunday. The metropolis had submitted a request to the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport a year ago, seeking permission for the construction at this location. The metropolis is now set to release tender invitations for the construction of the sky bridge in the coming days.


Mayor Maharjan underscored the critical need for a sky bridge at this location, emphasizing the potential safety hazards. He remarked, "This location poses significant security risks, as six lives have been lost in the past year."


The proposed bridge will be located near the traffic management office in Kusunti, along the Ring Road. Mayor Maharjan acknowledged the delayed approval but expressed gratitude for the eventual authorization. The sky bridge, featuring modern toilet facilities and constructed from toughened glass, is expected to enhance accessibility and safety.


Senior Metropolitan Engineer Shrikumar Maharjan, who heads the Infrastructure Division of the metropolis, highlighted the technical excellence of the Kusunti bridge project. He projected that the construction, estimated to cost Rs 40 million, would be completed within two years.
