KATHMANDU, Dec 12: Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, emphasized the lack of national statistics in Asia-Pacific countries during the opening of the Regional Statistics Committee meeting held in Bangkok on Wednesday. She said that the region's failure to cooperate in producing accurate national statistics is delaying progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Alisavanna pointed out that statistics are essential for development and warned against creating policies without reliable data. She said that achieving inclusive development goals, such as ‘leaving no one behind’, is impossible without accurate statistics on population, development, and the status of diverse communities. Currently, statistics exist only for areas like education, gender, and income, but many other key areas remain unaddressed.
