KATHMANDU, June 27: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has issued instructions to all private schools within the metropolis, urging them to provide details regarding the fees charged to students seeking admission to Grade 11 and 12 (+2 levels) for the upcoming academic session 2080/81 BS.

KMC in a notice requested private schools to submit the fee particulars by mid-July. The schools are required to include the decision made by their respective school management committees, as stated in Section 27 (9) of the KMC Education Act 2075 BS.

Currently, there are 520 private schools operating within the Kathmandu metropolis. Sitaram Koirala, the Head of the Education Department at KMC, informed Republica that letters have already been sent to all these schools, instructing them to provide the necessary details by mid-July.

Despite complaints regarding the arbitrary fees charged by private schools, KMC has exercised its authority, as explained by Education Department Head Koirala. According to regulations, schools are obligated to submit their fee statements to the metropolis annually, but many schools have neglected this practice. Koirala also emphasized that schools failing to provide fee details within the stipulated time frame will be closely monitored, and appropriate actions will be taken in accordance with the regulations. KMC has further stated that the final approved fee will be the one submitted to the metropolis after the decision of the school management committee.

Following KMC's instructions, private schools granted scholarships to 13,000 students last week. According to regulations, each school must provide a scholarship equivalent to 10 percent of the total student population.

Koirala, the Head of the KMC Education Department, warned that if the 10 percent scholarships are not provided by June 11 of the current academic session, the affiliation of such schools will be revoked and the schools will be locked.

Furthermore, the details of scholarship distribution must be submitted in accordance with Rules 58 and 59 of the KMC School Education Management Regulations, 2074 BS, and Section 50 of the KMC Education Act, 2075 BS.
