KATHMANDU, Feb 15: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has instructed the health institutions operating within its jurisdiction to submit their monthly reports through the online system.

In all 32 wards of KMC, private and community hospitals including polyclinics are instructed to submit their monthly reports through the online system.

According to Sajina Maharjan, Acting Head of KMC Health Department, the metropolis has initiated the provision by providing usernames and passwords for the Integrated Health Management Information System (IHMIS). Maharjan said that the KMC’s Health Department is preparing to conduct training sessions on operating the system along with providing the necessary credentials. She added that KMC has started consulting health institutions on this matter.

Maharjan said that the IHMIS was previously implemented and an integrated system has been implemented by advancing its features.

Maharjan said, “The major health problems and capacity of health services provided in the KMC will be identified from the data obtained through the reports submitted in this way. Based on these facts, it is easy to formulate policies and plans to improve health services.”

According to her, about 3000 health institutions including private, community hospitals, polyclinics and pharmacies are operating within KMC. There are around 70 hospitals offering specialized healthcare services. She said that the actual number of health institutions is being confirmed by updating the data.

“IHMIS includes medical laboratories in addition to pharmacies,” she  said, “This system enables tracking the frequency of health examinations conducted, treatments carried out for diseases, age demographics of patients, number of laboratory tests and X-rays examinations conducted, and OPD services received.”

According to the KMC, this arrangement will help in regulating and managing the health institutions operating in the metropolis. The KMC has been regularly monitoring health institutions for further management. The Environmental and Natural Resources Protection Act, 2077 includes provisions related to hazardous waste management as mentioned in Section 20 of the Act, which requires producers to process and manage harmful waste generated from health institutions and industries.
