KATHMANDU, Feb 6: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has installed fire extinguishers in the underground parking space in Dharahara located in Sundhara.

Chief of KMC’s Police Force Rajunath Pandey said that fire extinguishers have been installed on the first floor where free-of-charge parking is provided.

Currently, about 1,000 two-wheeled vehicles are being parked free of charge in the underground parking lot of Dharahara, which is still under construction.

The metropolis opened Dharahara's underground parking space after prohibiting roadside parking in the New Road area. The metropolis installed fire extinguishers as the question of safety including the risk of human casualties in the underground parking was raised.

Roadside parking in the New Road area was banned starting January 23, with an alternative parking arrangement provided in Kathmandu Tower, which is currently under construction at the old bus park area.

But after the traders and businessmen of New Road protested against the decision, the metropolis requested the construction company GIETC-Raman JV to open parking space at least on one of the three floors of Dharahara's underground parking from January 28.

However, there are issues with lighting and dust in the parking lot. The vehicle owners, who come to park their vehicles at Dharahara have requested the metropolis to urgently install lighting in the parking area and address the dust problem.

"We are not only installing fire control equipment, but we are also working through sanitation workers to solve the problem of dust. Ventilation is also operational on the first floor. Five city police personnel have been deployed for the security of the parking space,” said Pandey.
