Kidney patients end hunger strike

KATHMANDU, Aug. 21: The relay hunger strike called by kidney patients putting forth various demands for the last 13 days has ended from Tuesday.



The kidney patients had begun the protest in order to exert pressure for the fulfillment of their demands including formation of laws for the independent kidney transplantation, Rs.1 million to the kidney patients for the treatment, manage haemodialysis treatment at free of cost, extend the dialysis service to other districts among others.[break]



Minister for Health and Population, Rajendra Mahato, went to Shantibatika at Ratnapark on Tuesday and broke the hunger strike by offering juice to the agitating kidney patients, said coordinator of the kidney patients struggle committee Ramesh Chalise.



On the occasion, Minister Mahato expressed commitment to take initiative to resolve the problems of the kidney patients while also promising to provide relief to the kidney patients within a month, added Chalise.



The government has also formed a committee to address the kidney patients´ problems.



Health Secretary Dr. Pravin Mishra, Chief of the Division of Medicine Dr. Tirtharaj Burlakoti among others had accompanied Minister Mahato on the occasion.
